HSpice tutorial 1 - Getting Started With HSpice

Sunday 23 March 2014
Synopsys HSPICE is an optimizing analog circuit simulator. You can use it to simulate electrical circuits in steady-state, transient, and frequency domains.

HSPICE is unequaled for fast, accurate circuit and behavioral simulation. It facilitates circuit-level analysis of performance and yield,by using Monte Carlo, worst-case, parametric sweep, and data-table sweep analyses, and employs the most reliable automatic-convergence capability.

HSpice varieties

  • HSPICE - Which is like traditional SPICE simlators. HSPICE is faster and has more capabilities than typical SPICE simulators. HSPICE accurately simulates, analyzes, and optimizes circuits from DC to microwave frequencies that are greater than 100 GHz. HSPICE is ideal for cell design and process modeling. It is also the tool of choice for signal-integrity and transmission-line analysis.
  • HSPICE RF - HSPICE RF is newer and offers many(but not all) HSPICE simulation capabilities and HSPICE RF simulations of radio-frequency (RF) devices, which HSPICE does notsupport.

Simulation Types

Programming HSpice

HSPICE is just a program that takes in a netlist (a simple text file), containing a circuit description and analysis options, and outputs the analysis it has done on that circuit. An HSPICE netlist typically has a .sp extension, for example circuit.sp. Although HSPICE produces many output files, the only one that you will need to look at is the file with a .lis extension, for example circuit.lis. This file contains all of the important results from the HSPICE analysis—operating points, measurement results, error messages— everything is in this file. Typically after simulating a circuit, it’s best to check this file first to ensure there were no errors in your netlist.

As HSpice is licensed tool. This series will be involving HSpice 2008-09 Version, which holds good for Other Versions also.
